ProJeCt is a community benefit human service agency founded by local clergy and community leaders in the wake of the Martin Luther King, Jr. assassination and in response to the rising tide of poverty and social unrest of 1968. Its purpose was to advocate for action and to provide service to an under-served poor population in Easton, Pennsylvania. The leaders found a lack of efficient and coordinated efforts and set out to coordinate people and organizations in a joint effort to deal with all phases of the problem. The agency name reflects the Protestant, Jewish, and Catholic inter-faith roots of the founding leaders.Early accomplishments include the establishment of a youth center, a dental clinic, a well baby clinic, a drop-in center for the disabled, a citywide weatherization and housing rehabilitation program, a restitution program for juvenile offenders, and a shelter program.

Literacy education services began with a volunteer tutoring program for adults in 1979. In the ensuing years, ProJeCt added classroom instruction with professional teachers, offering instruction to every level learner. In 1985, ProJeCt established an emergency assistance program that helped the poor meet their most basic needs for food, shelter, and medicine. In the early 1990s, ProJeCt assumed operation of Easton’s Interfaith Food Pantry. After-school programs, a summer literacy day camp, and the Easton Middle School Student Success Program were introduced during the 1990s to meet the needs of school age children.

Today, the agency provides assistance to more than 5,000 people a year, serving Easton and the surrounding communities in Northampton County and Lehigh County. ProJeCt’s current model of service recognizes that poverty is complex and that families benefit from high quality, evidence-based, holistic and seamless support. The agency offers a continuum of research-based programs and builds partnerships to fill gaps in services. ProJeCt is committed to a continual evaluation and improvement process in order to ensure that our programs continue to make a measurable impact on the people served and the community.

ProJeCt is proud to continue our history of visible, proactive leadership in providing collaborative services to the community. With the support of donors and community partners, will continue to expand and improve our services in order to help people break the cycle of poverty.
