These essays were written by students from various levels of our English as a Second Language classes. Many of our adult students are eager to study and master the English language. We commend all our ESL students who work so hard to improve their lives and the lives of their children by learning to speak and write English. With so many other responsibilities, it’s not easy for an adult to prioritize language learning. Our students are enthusiastic, eager learners, and an inspiration to us all.
My New Roles
I play many roles in my life. In this moment my principal roles are as wife, mother, daugther and inmigrant. These are not my only roles, but they take all my time now.

My role as wife is new for me. I got married 4 months ago. I’m trying to play this role as good as possible, because I love my housband and we are making our family together. I give him a lot of time and I try to have a wonderful time together when he is home.

My role as mom is completely new for me, too. I got pregnant recently and at this moment I’m learning every thing to get a healthy baby for example, now eat healthy food. I want to eat all that my baby need for a good development. What I can do and what I can not do, also I have many changes in my body. I’m happy with this role, but really it is not easy.

My role as daughter take now in my life a very important place, because I came from Cuba to this country. My mom is in my country. She is an old woman. We always lived together and now I’m afraid for her. I know she misses me a lot. She is sad and I try to call her frecuently. I spend a lot of time in the computer every day write a large e-mail for my mom, because I need to give my mom my support. I love her and I would not like it if got sick because we are separated at this moment.

My role as inmigrant is new, too. I came to this country four months ago. Every things here is different for me; the language, weather, food, transportation ways. I’m trying to adapt myself to all these changes. I’m studing English to get better communication and to take my test to get my professional license here. I’m studing also, to get my driver license and improve my transportation. And my adaptation to cold weather. I think I need time.

In this moment my new roles are creating my new life and my new family. I hope I can get a successful life here.

A Thought to This Country

This story stared on dicember 5 1999 this date
Was when I came this country my thought
Is about how changed my life I am a person
That think, this country is of opportunity
Because I had successed all that propose and
I successed to many thing only spoked Spanish
Now my new goal is learn English because
If I learn English I can develop my self and
At the same time if the president George W.
Bush is giving a opportunity to all my latin
Community; if this country is the best with
This opportunity this country will be best
To the best.

My Best Memories of My Life
One day I asked my family “Would you like to go on vacation to my country?” My wife was happy, my son and daughter were nervous, because they did not speak Spanish. My daughter told me, “Please, Dad, help me speak Spanish, my Spanish is not good.” We practiced Spanish for three years. After that we went to Guatemala. They were surprised to see the way people live in there. When we were back they changed their way of thinking. They are thankful for the things we have.
